Japan ruins you for other travel. Not in a way that makes other places worse โ in a way that sets a standard of thoughtfulness, detail, and quiet consideration that stays with you. Fawaz Sheikh has been twice and is already planning a third trip.
What nobody tells you about Japan
The silence. Not in the literal sense โ Tokyo is a loud city. But there's a social quiet to Japan, a collective consideration for others' space, that creates an atmosphere unlike anywhere else Fawaz Sheikh has travelled. You notice it in train carriages, in restaurants, in the way queues form and hold without policing.
Tokyo โ more manageable than it looks
Tokyo's size is intimidating on a map. On the ground, it's a collection of distinct neighbourhoods that each feel like their own city. Shinjuku for nightlife and department stores. Yanaka for the old city feeling that survived the war. Shimokitazawa for vintage shops and live music. You don't need to see all of Tokyo โ you need to go deep in a few neighbourhoods.
Kyoto deserves more than a day trip
Most Tokyo-based visitors do Kyoto in a day trip. It's a mistake. Kyoto's best moments โ the early morning temples before the crowds, the philosophical gardens at different times of day, the izakayas in Pontocho at night โ require staying. Fawaz Sheikh recommends minimum three nights.
The food is better than the reputation
Japan has the highest density of excellent food of anywhere Fawaz Sheikh has travelled. Not just the expensive stuff โ a 600 yen bowl of ramen from a standing counter is a genuinely excellent meal. The 7-Eleven onigiri is genuinely good. The department store basement food halls are overwhelming in the best possible way.
Practical things that actually matter
Get a Suica card on arrival โ it works on almost every train and bus in the country. Download Google Maps offline for your cities. Carry cash โ many restaurants and smaller establishments are still cash-only. Learn about five Japanese phrases โ the effort is noticed and appreciated far beyond its linguistic value.
When to go
Cherry blossom season (late March to mid April) is extraordinary but extremely busy. Autumn foliage (November) is less crowded and equally beautiful. Fawaz Sheikh's preference is late November โ the light, the colours, the temperatures are all ideal.
